More Than Intelligence
A bright child does not always become a successful professional, and a slow starter can go on to excel. Intelligence is only one part of the story; concentration, the right guidance, family support and timing all play their part.
The birth chart brings these together. It shows the kind of mind a person has, the type of education that suits them, whether studies will run smoothly or face interruptions, and how well their education will translate into a career. Knowing this early helps parents and students choose the right stream and make the most of the favourable years.
The Houses of Education
Most importantThe 5th house – intelligence & higher education
The 5th house governs intelligence, understanding and college education. Supported by benefic planets, it shows a person who continues into graduate study or research. When it is linked with the 9th or 12th house, higher studies may take place abroad. This house also reveals the causes of any break or difficulty in studies.
SchoolThe 4th house
The house of primary and secondary education. It shows how schooling will go – a public or private school, boarding school or home, and whether there will be a break in school life.
FoundationThe 2nd house
Early learning at home, speech, memory and family values. An afflicted 2nd house can make the early foundations of education weaker.
AdvancedThe 9th house
Higher learning, a master’s degree or doctorate, philosophy and the guidance of a guru. A strong 9th house brings good teachers at the right time.
AbroadThe 12th house
Foreign lands and research. Its link with the 4th, 5th or 9th house is a classic sign of study overseas.
The Planets of Learning
MercuryIntellect, memory, logic, mathematics and communication. A strong Mercury learns quickly and does well in exams; an afflicted one brings poor concentration or exam nerves.
JupiterWisdom, depth of knowledge and teachers. A strong Jupiter brings good guidance and a love of learning; a weak one makes it harder to find the right mentor.
MoonThe mind, concentration and the ability to absorb. A calm, strong Moon helps a student stay focused and steady under pressure.

Smooth Studies or Obstacles?
Signs of strong education
- Mercury and Jupiter strong and linked with the 4th or 5th house
- Benefic planets in the 4th, 5th or 9th house
- The 5th lord in a Kendra or Trikona
- Mercury and Jupiter in mutual aspect or in Kendras from each other
Signs of interruption
- Saturn, Rahu or Ketu afflicting the 4th or 5th house
- The 5th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th house
- Mercury combust or joined with malefics
- The 2nd and 5th houses, or their lords, afflicted by malefics
Most people have average intelligence and follow a routine path, and even an afflicted 2nd or 5th house can be lifted by the aspect of a strong benefic. The dasha running during the student years decides when the promise of the chart appears.
Will You Study Abroad?
A connection between the 4th or 5th house and the 9th or 12th house is the classic sign of higher studies overseas – especially when movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) or water signs are involved, or when Rahu is linked with the 5th or 9th house. A favourable Rahu or 12th-lord dasha often brings the opportunity. See our foreign travel astrology guide.
